The 45th anniversary of Earth Day is fast approaching. Earth Day occurs each April 22nd, and was first celebrated in 1970. The international holiday serves as an important rallying point for environmental causes and for increasing environmental awareness. Earth Day originated at a time that many consider to be the birth of the modern environmental movement. In a piece on the history of the holiday, The Earth Day Network explores the atmosphere of the time. The holiday was first proposed by then U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. Senator Nelson saw the opportunity to take advantage of the emerging public consciousness about pollution, the energy of the student protest movement, and use the momentum to put protecting the environment on the national agenda. The first Earth Day saw a turnout of 20 million Americans. Earth Day is now celebrated by more than 1 billion people in 192 countries. It is the largest civic observance in the world.

As a recycling company, protecting the Earth and conserving resources is R.A.K.I.s business. Electronic waste was not one of the big environmental issues when Senator Nelson first began his work to organize Earth Day. Today it is one of the many growing problems that our planet faces.
